What does the center console look like when the heater controls are deleted? Didn't all L88 come with no heater until 69? It almost looks like there are controls in the center console, but hard to tell from the photo.

This car brought $54,000 the last time it was listed on e-bay. What does this guy think it is worth in this condition? This car at Nabers or D&A would have to have $70,000 spent on it to bring it back from the dead.

Either way it is gonna be interesting to watch this one run its course again. It was originally painted silverstone silver too.

There was no indication that the M/C had ever been changed at any point.
Eric,

You mean outside of the fact that it is the wrong master cylinder for your application? :)

Seriously though (and although strange things have happened on the assembly line), it seems unlikely that the assembly plant would have made this particular substitution. If I remember correctly, there was a difference in the piston bore size between the "509" and "346" castings to vary the pressure to compensate for the vacuum assist... It's not exactly like sending someone down to the hardware store if you run out of ½ bolts.

If this one's owner had even some inkling that it's worth something, you'd think he'd have stored it a little more carefully.
I've seen a lot worse than this... There is even an internet site devoted to cars suffering from similar neglect. Also remember that the "owner" of this car isn't selling it directly... For all we know, the "broker" might be offering to sell it for him for a few thousand and he's content with that.

I know I'm gonna upset somebody here with this statement but, IT'S ONLY A CORVETTE!!! As enamored as I am with limited production options like L-88, the cost to fake one is far less than to buy one, and fake documentation is becoming just as easy to acquire.
No... Not upsetting at all... Your opinion is certainly valid and from some of the other posts in this thread, you aren't the only one who feels this way. Still, I think you underestimate the cost to "fake one" so well that it is above scrutiny... Same goes for the documentation... There are many sources for paperwork, but most of it is easily detectable as reproduced.

To invest big money in a special Corvette is crazy unless it is just something you gotta have (I can relate to that too, though) or has a verifiable owner history.
I agree with you completely... While I do look at the financial implications when I purchase a car, I buy it because I like the car, not for what I can sell it for in a few years. As far as what I look for... Documentation, ownership history, and the car itself.

Had GM imbedded the engine option in the serial number or had some kind of factory maintained documentation to verify the build content of each serial number produced, I might feel differently.
If that had happened, the cost to purchase one of the really desirable cars would be two to three times higher (or more) than they are now. Just take a look at some of the Mopars out there... Prices on those cars are really out there. Do you really want $1,000,000 L-88s (Mark, Steve don't answer that! :) )? All of a sudden, the current pricing of $100,000 starts to look like a pretty good deal!

To be honest Eric, I'd love to go check this car out, but the timing is really lousy... I'm finishing one restoration and just purchased another project car... I'd would like to finish one or two of my current projects before jumping into another one. It doesn't prevent me from maintaining an interest in what is happening with these cars though.

Regards,

You're right. The master cylinder casting number doesn't make sense and it is possible that mine had been changed at some point. The date stamped into the brake line boss wasn't legible to verify if it matched. It is a dual bleeder type so it is of the same approximate vintage. The piston size for a manual brake set up is 1" and power brakes is 1 1/8". It does seem odd if they had substituted one for another being a safety item and all.

My build sheet also said my car should be Corvette Bronze but the trim tag is coded for Lemans Blue and a dark blue interior which it does have. Everything else matches so I think the order for the paint color must have been changed at some point during assembly. The car was only repainted one time and the same same color at that -Lemans Blue (I know, I stripped it down to the glass for my resto).

Anyhow, I think exceptions were probably made on the line but I'm no NCRS judge and haven't looked at that many untouched survivor Corvettes, especially L88's.

I wish the new owner of this L88 all the luck in the world. If this "broker" doesn't get his asking price, I still got $6K in cash ready to buy!!!!
That car'd make a great pro-streeter all tubbed out.* ;)

If your going to see the car. The first place I would look is at the console padding in front the brake handle. It had a sticker that said to use 103 octane only. The glue very sticky. There has to be some left, even if you brought it to a lab. For $60K, I would take it to a lab, if it shows signs of old glue, it's REAL!!! If not...walk away.

Why am I not surprised. Did he say exactly where it is? Maybe someone else here is close by and we can call his bluff.

He wants $60k for a car that noone can go and look at. He'll keep trying and maybe someone will come along.

I asked him if it was 500 miles north and he said yes.. I really didn't get into it any more because I'm not going but if someone else wants to go look give him a call. It would be interesting to meet the actual owner. :chevy

For any one interested. I also made contact with Aaron about this car. I introduced myself and stated I would like to make a thorough inspection to include dropping the gas tank. I would be on an airplane and be willing to travel any where ay any time. He said.......... 'No'. He went on to tell me no one is going to be allowed to make an inspection.
It is certainly his right to set the rules as he see's fit. I informed him this sent up 'Red Flags' to any one seriously interested in this car. I have decided that I will avoid this L88(?) until the waters become clearer.

I think that this guy just wants to find a sucker on E-bay. Why wouldn't you let someone come and see the car. I'll bet if this guy was spending $50,000 he would want to see the car.

Lets flood him with e-mails telling him what a jerk he is :cuss :cuss :cuss

"......I'd rather invest big money in a rotary dial phone manufacturer's stock hoping for rotary dials to come back in vogue, than pay some of the money that's being handed over for many of these cars today.

Can you take me as an partner ? Sounds more profit than this ebayvette.

Spend $50k+ on a car that no one can inspect. Red Flags hell, this guy is pulling off something with this statment.

Mark, I cannot believe that he would not allow an inspection. Sounds like he wants to make an effortless sale or is hiding something. Not a good sign.

I had the same issue when the previous auction came up. I asked if he culd verify some additional numbers and he mentioned that the car was too far away to be able to do that and that I would not be able to check for myself.

I can believe it...

My guess is that the broker is trying to leverage the entire sale.

I doubt that the owner has any idea what the car is being offered for sale for. If someone was allowed to make a personal inspection of the car and the topic of price came up, I'd be willing to bet that the broker would have some explaining to do...

I wish the new owner of this L88 all the luck in the world. If this "broker" doesn't get his asking price, I still got $6K in cash ready to buy!!!!

Eric,

There is a certain 1971 Corvette that I have kept track of for several years... Psuedo-Pro Street car... Tubbed with a narrowed solid rear axle, but relatively stock outside of that.

Car is an original ZR-1.

I have thoughts of buying it every couple of years, but at current prices, the cost of restoring it doesn't make a lot of sense financially. It isn't going anywhere anytime soon so I'll continue to keep tabs on it.

A pro street L-88 wouldn't surprise me at all... As I said, I've seen some pretty strange things. :)

Hi, Betcha that the "BROKER" is really some kind of shyster who guarantees the owner at least $2000.00 bux, for that old chevy in the barn. GREEDY,GREEDY,GREEDY. Seems to me he himself ought to buy it and eliminate the curent owner from any uncomfortable questions????? :yesnod: Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,anyway ,,,,,,,,,,,,,Peace, Craig :seeya

I can easily believe the theory of the Broker skimming off the top for a huge profit. If that's the case, I would ask, what's the address of the cave the current owner has been living in the past twenty+ years? This makes for great conversation and is obviously interesting to many people, but, until this car sells we won't know the real deal.

Mark
