on my 81 corvette, most of the interior lights do not work. one of the turn signal lights is the only light that shows up. the speedo or tachometer cable light does not work either. Does anyone know why this would be happening? my right headlight has been taken out of the car to be repainted, could i be breaking a circuit of some sort with the headlight out not allowing the lights to work? thanks.
I can't really help you but i can tell you that when dash lights, particularily dash signal lights are not operating, that it's often becuase a bulb is missing or burnt on the outside somewhere. I've seen that on a few cars I've worked on. The 81 has a computer, maybe its malfunctioning although i don't think the signal lights/headlights are computer controlled. If I were you I'd put all the light bulbs back in and retest. When doing trouble-shooting it's important to fix all the things you KNOW are wrong before attacking the issue. Thats the technique that seems to work the best for me. One time I found myself messing aorund in the guage panel, running a wire back down through the firewall to make a dash light operate.... turned out to be a burnt signal light and i ended up ripping that wire out.
I just replaced all my bulbs in the housing--- Its not that difficult. undo screws from to sides, top and underneath. The tricky part is poping out the speedo cable. You can do it with your fingers. I took the housing out and replaced the bulbs, but kept the plastic fitting and sanded the contacts. Its alot cheaper. the bulbs , I purchased at a local hardware store.
On my 81 i had the same problem and it was the headlight switch.
Also i found out another time that if the fuse is blown to the tail lights that the dash light fuse will not get any juice either. Some kinda safety i guess.
Good luck
