Paging PyjamaSam, a possible solution to your starter problem
Chris, my father was telling me today that the most likely problem with your cars starting problem is the starter motor is not alligned properly with the Fly wheel / Bendix gear? He also asked me if you have problems starting the car when its hot. He says that is a tale tell sign that wither a) starter and flywheel not aligned b) dowel not inserted (I'm trying to remember what he said) c) you have the wrong started motor d) your flywheel has been removed and the dowel thingy is not there. Again, I as you know have no idea what a Bendix gear is, nor how a car actually starts, so I'll have to wait 'till tomorrow to get more info. So what this all means is that you need to have the alignment on the starter checked, with relation to the fly wheel or Bendix gear, again, goin' on memory here.

Hmmm. The alignment problem might be it. I know that when I first put the starter in it was basically doing the same thing (not turning, no click, nothing), but after I took it out and put it back in everything was fine (well I have the issues that I have now). And the car seams to not have that many issues when it is warm (witness the starting every time we stopped on the cruse). I am wondering if next time it happens, if I put the car in gear and roll it a bit to move the fly wheel, and then try starting it. Maybe the starter is off enough I only see intermittent problems. Hmm.. Now the question is how do you align a starter.
