Default carb rebuild question

I have my holley dissassembled. I am supposed to put the parts in a bucket of carb cleaner. Is there any reason I cant use a dishpan of dish soap?

I'm fairly certain the dishpan will clean it, but that's not something you want rushing through your combustion chamber. Carb cleaner won't affect the engine. I think it'll also dissolve the grime better.

Take Steve's advice. If you don't want to buy a gallon of that stuff, just get a spray can of carb cleaner (need it around anyway right?) and clean with that. If you have compressed air, use that as well and you will be good to go.

the carb cleaner is much stronger. It will strip paint in seconds not to mention i used it to kill a few bugs today, they hit the ground in 3 seconds flat, less it they were lighter. It also dries up fast, i might become worried of the dish soap method having a bit of rust afterwards, so let them dry fast, i put my stuff like that in a room w/ a dehumidifier. I would go w/ the carb cleaner, or just spray them w/ the 2 dollar generic 19 oz can from pepboys.

You might get by with the dishpan & dish soap if the carbs internal passages are already pretty clear. If the internal passages have any accumulation (varnish/sludge etc) in them, you need to soak the carb in actual carb cleaner. Just spraying the outside & bores with spray carb cleaner does not clean out the internal passages either. "Real" carb cleaner is formulated to dissolve the varnish & sludge in the internal passages.... dish soap will not. I soak them for 2 days (in real carb cleaner) if they are relatively new. If the carb is old, I soak it for a week. Otherwise, the crud stays in there. Then you'll get all frustrated because the carb won't tune and you either take it to a carb shop or buy a new carb.

If you use compressed air to blow out the passages, keep it low or you stand a chance of blowing out the small "lead ball" seals that are used to plug drill access passages when the carb is manufactured. These usually do not come in the rebuild kits.

Pay yer money, take yer chances.
