I went to the parts store and they gave me plugs for a 69' 350. I know the motor isn't original, but according to the #'s search I did through Mortec, the engine I have came in a Vette or a Camaro. Both take the same plugs according to the parts store, and I tried two different brand of plugs but they wouldn't fit. The threaded part is too short. Unfortunately I threw the old plugs away a long time ago (dummy). The heads don't have too many #'s on them (a JJ stamping, a 55 stamping and a K stamping). Does anyone have any idea on how I can go about finding the proper plugs? Does the parts store have the wrong part # listed?
Re: Help! Replacement spark plugs not fitting. (litevette)
You may need the casting numbers off of the heads, which will be found under the valve covers stamped on top of the head. Take this number and match it up to a year make and model and then you should be able to get the right plugs.

Small block Chevy's basicly take two types of plugs. Those engines 69 and earlier take plugs with a gasket. Those newer take tapered seat gasketless plugs. Both styles come in various heat ranges. Some of the late (88 up) model aluminum heads take another type. The engine block has nothing to do with the heads. You need to find out what heads you have.

Thanks for your help guys. I just got back from the parts store and I think I've found the solution. I asked to look at the plugs for a 72', they looked skinnier so I brought them home. They do fit! I just hope that they are not too hot or too cold. I guess I'll se when I fire it up! If you think I might be o.k. or if you think I should stop, please let me know. Thanks again.
