I just had my car dyno'd today (disapointing, but now I know what I'm starting with) and the guy was saying the tach wasn't calibrated right. It looks like it's at the right RPM when idling but he said he was letting off at 5000 (I didn't want to go much higher than that, don't know how much this old engine can take) and the sheet only went up to about 4300. Which is most likely to be right, the car or the dyno? If the car is off what is causing it? What can I do to fix this or do I have to take it somewhere? Thanks for the help.
Does your tach jump around at all, or does it sweep smoothly? I'm by no means a pro but I beleive it is either your tach filter (in line, near tach) or the tach circuit board (right in the tach gauge itself)
If it's your board, get a new one. I attempted to get mine repaired and it's way off....
Connect it to a dwell meter that has a tach function and run it.
Ok, what's a dwell meter and where would I find one? Should a mechanic have this? I think it does jump around a little, but I can't say I've noticed it being really bad.
Any mechanic that has been around for a while should have one. I'm sure that I still have one in my tool box that you could use in case you don't find one anywhere else.
Were you planning on posting the dyno numbers?

Well, it wasn't pretty. The engine is a L48, but the smog equipment is gone and it has headers with true dual exhaust, no cats. But even with that my max RWHP was 158 (at 4300 RPM's remember, so max could be more) and about 235 lb*ft max of torque. Fortunately, I can't imagine it possibly getting worse so there is nowhere to go but up. If you don't mind I might try and get ahold of you to borrow that tool sometime in the future.
