Default Timing Questions

Well, we thought we had the 383 times correctly, but apparently not. With the vaccum advance connected, when you press the gas pedal part way down and hold it, the engine reves up and down, instead of just keeping a steady RPM. Then when you dissconnect the vaccum it is fine.

So I guess I have two basic questions. Usually what should timing be before vaccum advance and then what should total timing usually be? This is a 10.5:1 CR 383 with Dart Pro 1 200cc heads.

With the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged you should be looking for about 36 degrees of full mechanical advance. You want to get your full mechanical advance in by 3000 RPM if possible. If you have increased your compression ratio and installed a high performance camshaft you may find that your engine likes to have a bit more timing at idle than you might expect. Some engines that have been modified do not like to have any vacuum advance at all.
