Has anyone attempted to mount anything larger than the 4x6 speakers in the dash of an early C3? Is there any way a 6x9 would fit and still permit the unaltered installation of the left and right dash pad assemblies?
I actually got Kenwood 4x6s, and had to do some altering myself. Not sure if it was because my dash had warped a little with age, but I just couldn't get the damn things to fit. This would lead me to believe that 6x9s would definately be near impossible without significant modification. Then again, I have an '80 so the earlier models might be different. There just doesn't seem like there's enough room up there for 6x9s.

Re: C3 in-dash speakers (ettev)
I tried 4x6" mbQuart speakers in my 78, but they were way too tall. I tried the Alpine 4x6" speakers and they were too wide. I finally tried the mbQuart 4" round speakers and they fit just right (man it sounds like I am telling a childs story  )
I don't know how you would ever get anything biger then a 4x6 in the dash with out A LOT of work. I mean the mbQuart 4x6" were tall and There was no way I was going to get them in. I can't imagine a 6x9...
A local stereo installer used to do a lot of corvettes in the 70's. He says that the best place for front speakers is in the kick pannel. I think all C3s still have the same mounting locations down there. You can get a pretty good sized speaker without too much modification.
I'm thinking about getting two way component speakers and putting the woofer in the kick pannel and the tweeter in the Astro Ventalation port- you know the port that blasts hot air in the summer and cold air in the winter ;)
Right now I have 4x6 Kenwoods that fit and work fine. Just thought maybe 6x9's would sound a little better. No chopping for me though! I'll stay with the 4x6's. :)
