Up through 1974 the tachs all were mechanical. Many people convert to HEI or other electronic distributors and also change the tach unit to match. It's possible that they are running a column or dash mounted stand alone tach instead of the original tach next to the speedometer. If you are looking at an "original" ie numbers matching pre 1975 car then yes you would need to go back to a distributor with a tach drive. If numbers are not a concern then just find out if the in dash tach is functional out of a 75 to 77 Vette.

Corvettes through 1974 used a distributor that had a tach drive. The tachs were (are) cable driven like a speedometer. A regular non tach drive distibutor cannot be made into a tach drive unit. In 75 GM went to a HEI unit and an electronic tach. While the newer distributor will work fine in 74 and older corvettes for the engine it will not allow use of the cable driven tach. Aftermarket tach drive distributor are available but are quite pricey.
