Hmmm - the 5/16 return line sounds like the culprit, to cause ps system back pressure. Every OE line I have ever seen is 3/8, and for a good reason. How in the world did the return line end up being 5/16 ?

Edit...The other option I have in this case would be to increase the return line diameter to 3/8" a lot earlier towards the steering box if that could be considered a possible solution, but I cannot alter the intiial line size exiting the box at all.
The return line from the assist unit has always been 3/8" leading back to the pump so there has been no alteration to that part of the plumbing, just the suspect alignment of the T piece in this configuration.
