Fact is, whether people here want to admit it or not... a 13-sec car is slow today. A bone stock 427/435hp '68-69 BB wouldn't run better than low-13s (give it whatever tires you want). Remember, we're talking gross HP... on a chassis dyno, that same motor might make 320rwhp (same as a stock '02 LS1 346ci F-body/C5 Vette).

L88's? Sure, they were very fast. How many REAL L88s are owned by members on this board who actually drive/race them?

If you want to keep up with the times (pun intended) then the C3 will have to be modded. If you don't mind getting beat in a race (straight line OR road course) by 4-door sedans of today, then that is perfectly fine. :) But if it doesn't run mid, low-12s then there's LOTS out there that will hand it to you.

I think its great that people on this board have a lot of various reasons for owning/driving/enjoying their C3. It makes it fun and interesting. Remember, there will ALWAYS be someone faster, so its nothing to lose sleep over. Sadly, almost _everything_ will be faster if your C3 is not well-tuned, and more than likely if its not modified to boot.

So keep turning the wrenches!! :D I got mine to where it will certainly run mid-11s if a track will let me...that's fast enough for me in this car.

Yes Corvettes are slow. I agree completely.

NASCAR is fast
McLarens are fast
Lamo's are fast
F-15's are fast
sound is fast
Light is fast

What is his point?
Interesting… Your “fast” spectrum is about a googolplex times broader than your “slow” spectrum.

I would say that slow is a relative thing especially given the constraints put upon the domestic carmakers of the day. If we were to compare the mid 70's stock vettes with other moderately high volume stock sports cars ie. MG, Triumph, Fiat I still do not consider the C3 as slow. Wasn't this the era of the Mustang II - hardly a performance machine, Mopar muscle was also virtually dead. Now there was the Bricklin and then the Pantera which had a Ford engine, Ferrari, Lambo, etc but even at that the prices were much higher and the thought of crosscountry cruises was a fightening thought as repair and maintence could prove a real issue. Given what they cost, there ability to be easilly modded and repaired at any Chevy dealership (and most all small garages) the political circumstances even in hindsight I don't think of the mid 70's vettes as slow for there era. Ever drive a stock Pacer, Pinto, the mighty 4 cyl Mustang II - keep it in perspective. I am just glad that GM kept building them when the pressure to drop the Vette in the 70's reared its ugly head again.

You are right to a point. There are a Lot of cars that can and will hand a C3 vette its azz on a silver platter, however, if your car ran a mid 13 e/t, there arent going to be too many cars around that will be too much faster. remember a lot of import owners believe an intake and fart can will make their car turn 12s. When I was running 13.9x I was faster then 3/4ths of the cars around in my area. granted there are a lot that could easily destroy me, but they will never race. The ones that would race me, I would destroy (3rd gen F-body's, some mustangs, lot of turbo imports). Its just luck of the draw really, if you have a car that can hit 100mph in the quarter, not many on the road can touch you. the faster your car can go, the smaller the chance of losing.

Well, I guess its a difference in locale. Here in the N. Dallas suburbs, I would venture that most late-model F-bodies/C5 Vettes/Mustangs run 110+mph through the quarter... solid mid-12 sec cars with traction (these are the younger guys with less $$ to spend on mods). Many, many 100% street cars around here will run 125-135mph through the traps. Then we've got a lot of cars like the one in your sig! :) Those are just downright nasty, of course. Plenty of 600+rwhp C5s, etc. Stock cars around here are just not that common. Go to the track here and you see very few of them in fact. 100mph will get you beat by a STOCK 4600lb Ford truck nowdays.

If you live in Colorado, then you have to add a couple of seconds to the 1/4 mile runs. :)

Again, it just has to do with where you live. If a mid-13 sec car is faster than 90+% of the "fast cars" where you live, then that's great. Where I'm at, mid-13s will get you beat 75% of the time by anything that is worth racing. I'm not counting (and I'm sure you're not, either) the Civics and Accords with the "fart-can" exhaust pipes as worth racing. We have plenty of that crap, too. Takes 16 seconds to get down the 1/4 mile and its a disgrace to drag racing.

Was slow, but relatively cheap to fix. I have 17k in mine but can contend with some 50k cars (and look just as good without a doubt).

This topic is flawed. "C3s are slow" ? C3s have four wheels. You are talking about every corvette made between 1968 and 1982. Some were fast, some were slow. All can be made to go faster. Somebody else will always be faster still...... I am looking at t new Volvo station wagon that will go 14.00 in the 1/4 mile. A few minor tweaks and i will be in the 13s. :) MJ

I'll bet the 1980 LG4 owners would have something to say about that.

It may be, but what other car gets challenged everywhere it goes.

Tonight, driving home, cars that kept pushing me, challenging me, etc were:

S2000
CLK430
ML55 Amg
Lightning

to name a few.

In freeway traffic, you can easily keep them at bay. Drives them nutz

Two of my friends have 1995 automatic 5.0's, bone stock, and really really slow. Even my little 79 can take them. I can't wait to get a cam, then maybe have some power.
