Default Headlight Assemblies.

Could someone tell me how to remove the headlight assemblies from my '72? The lights are stuck in the "up" position and I have seen that a coule of the springs are either missing or broken. I would like to remove each assembly, dissassemble ,clean and replace any broken or damaged pieces.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

You should be able to remove them from the bottom once you drop the valence panel. There are basically 4 attachment points, be sure to soak them good with a penetrating oil.

Removing and replaceing entire assemblys is a MAJOR pain. Much care will have to be given not to scratch paint. Been a couple of years, but I think it is 4 or 5 bolts holding assemblys to mounting points. Pretty straight forward un bolting, its getting the dern things out and in, sheeeeewwww!!!! :cry

Thanks for the responses. Do the asemblies unbolt and come out through the bottom or are they removed from the top?

Thanks,

Mike

Remove them from the bottom. Put a sheet of heavy cardboard in front of the radiator to protect it. Dont ask :banghead:
The lights are held in place by 4 bolts which can easily reached from beneath the car.

Bolted on four corners....come out from the bottom. You can see the mounting points when the hood is raised, or at least feel the bolts with your hand. Not that bad a job to remove, disassembele the units, clean them, assemble and replace. I would suggest that if you don't have an assembly manual, take digitals as you are tearing the assemblies down, will save you some headaches in the long run.

Mike, here how I did it, to the best of my feeble memory. disconnect the linkage from the actuator by removing the pin that goes through the clevis on the end of the actuator rod. Disconnect the elbow linkage and springs. At the hinge point, use an allen wrench to loosen the stop collars on the hinge pivot shafts. Slide the collars toward the center of the assembly. Raise the assembly as though the headlights are in the up position, so that the lid is fully above the surround panel and slide the entire assembly to one side as far as it will go. This should allow the shaft to come loose from the opposite side. Tilt the assembly and lift it out of the other pivot point and you should have it out.

See if you can get a copy of the Glass-Ra book on C3's,it covers rebuilding the headlights and making adjustments. worth the price.
