Took the '76 out the other day, stopped on me after about 5 miles. Fuel in the tank but none getting to the carb. Had it towed to a local shop (they should be able to put a fuel pump on an old Chevy, right). By the time they got around to looking at it it was getting fuel to the carb. Did some ingition work and took it for a test drive, died on them on the way back to the shop. Replaced fuel pump and called me. Got there a couple hrs. later and drove it home, about 2 miles, OK.
Decided to take it for a spin today, got about 3 miles and it dies, same problem, fuel in the tank but none to the carb. Guy in shop says it must the the tank and so he wants to replace it. Thinks there is a problem with the bladder that only lets fuel out slowly. After it sit awhile the pump and lines fill with fuel and the car runs for a couple of miles. That is what it did today, after I pushed it half a mile it started again. Guy I bought it from told me he put an new bladder tank in just before I bought it 2 yrs ago, no docs and the guy is long gone.
Anyone else with gas tank problems and is replacing the tank the only solution. Should I be looking elsewhere for the problem.
i have been fighting very similar problems lately.it starts fine and after it gets warm it starts to hesitate and backfire and at that time i dont see fuel in the bowls.once i get the tank empty i am planning to drop it and have a look in there(crud, water) and i'm also going to replace the fuel pump.
good luck
here's a link for a new tank http://www.quantaproducts.com/store/
I had a simular problem. I thought I had vapor lock and a bad fuel pump. I had neither. I would take the car go about 2 miles and the car would die. Waited 10 minutes and it would start and I could drive it home. What I found was this: no fuel sock in my gas tank so I was sucking crap to the carb. I dropped the tank cleaned it, reinstalled a new fuel sock AND JUST BEFORE REINSTALLING THE TANK I blew out the fuel line. A big wad of crap shot out. There was my major problem. I hooked everything back up I even put on a new fuel pump (not needed) replaced the fuel filter and the car works fine.
Advice check the fuel sock, replace your fuel filter and blow the fuel line clear.

Having similar problems. Just bought an 81 with 30,000 miles on it. Car sat for a long time with who knows what in the gas tank. Initial problem was engine cutting out going up hills. I replaced the fuel filter and found it half filled with corrosion particles. Next the fuel pump started leaking (don't know if related or not). Replaced that. Replaced second fuel filter after about 200 miles and more crap in it. Probably will pull the tank unit soon and check the sock and tank condition. Good luck,

Good advice. I was gonna say a clogged fuel sock - but after 2 years - not likely. More likely it fell off - and crap is clogging the line.
