Default HEI conversion

How difficult is it to convert a points distributor system to an HEI system? I want to swap the distributor for a standard GM type. This is on a 307 in a '71 pickup so tachdrive is not a problem. Are there wiring and other directions posted anywhere? Thanks in advance

HEI's are easy. All you need to do is to run a heavy gauge wire from ignition on 12volt sorce to the cap and hook up the plug wires and set you timing.

There is 5 spade style connectors Three are taken up by the plug which goes into the distributor to the ignition control module under the rotor. the other two are for the tach and the 12 volt source. These are commonly labled as such on the coil cover. but to help you out it should look something like this crude asci sketch

Three wires from cap which are nearest the cap

Tach 12Volt

Hope this helps.

These are easy conversions! In addition to just replacing distributor, the wiring is simple.
To keep the budget inline, you can find a decent used HEI dist in a scrap yard, and give it a little minor cleanup and work. You may even get plug wires with it.
Good info posted above! When hooking up to 12V source, make sure it's switched with ignition.
Good Luck :chevy

Thanks guys. I am going to pick up a used one I think and give it a shot. When I put in the new distributor, (I've never done it before), I simply place it in approx. the same orientation as the old and set the timing I assume?

No. You need to place it in 'exactly' the same position. Then set timing.
For good write-up on dist inst, go the pull down menus at top. Tools/Tech Tips/C3 and print off "How to inst your dist" & "How to determine top dead center".
Take your time and Good Luck :chevy
