Twice this summer the linkage on my '71 4sp has slipped out. Upon repairing last weekend we realized that we couldn't get the cotter pin in for 1st and second and we had to use bailing wire. Is this a solid alternative? Also,
is there an easier way to get to the linkage from inside the car? Is there an access panel under the carpet??
Sorry you didn't get the answers you wanted. If you can't get the cotter pin in... something is wrong IE the cotter pin is bent or the linkage isn't on correctly.
It's not that the cotter pin won't go in, we can't get in a position to get it in. The clearance wasn't there to do it.
That's why we're looking for an alternative way to get the pin in because we couldn't see how else to do it.
Which end of the shifter rod are you talking about, the end at the tranny or the end at the shifter itself? If it's the end on the tranny shift lever, just use a wrench to remove the shift lever from the tranny and swing the lonkage down to attach the rod to the lever and insert the pin. If it's the end of the rod on the shifter itself, you're SOL.
