Recently I bought Hooker comp headers for my 1977. I didn't get the ceramic coated ones. Has anyone painted the black ones with high-temp paint to prevent rust. Has anyone wrapped them to keep heat out of the engine bay and the cockpit?
Looking for some suggestions before I install them. I'll be running the headers with Hooker Comp exhaust pipes and some Dynomax Turbo Mufflers.
As long as you're not running too rich or have timing messed up, the ceramics should be fine. Don't even think about the wraps - moisture under it will rust your headers thru in no time at all. None of the manufacturers will warranty headers that have been wrapped. HTH
Do you have access to a large oven? If so, get the high temperature spray paint that you bake on at 400 degrees. I used it on my snowmobile exhaust pipes and it still looks good after two seasons.
I've never used the wraps, but they are functional and cheaper than getting them ceramic coated.
Whatever you do, DON'T put the headers on without new paint, though. The paint that is on them when you get them from Hooker is temporary, and will turn to rust within a week.
