Now that I have my new 454 installed I need to tie in the exhaust. I installed a set of Hooker Super Comp headers with the install. I have new 2.5 inch exhaust all ready installed in the car. Just need to tie it in. The guy at the exhaust shop is trying to talk me into an X pipe. I was thinking of just an H pipe. Anybody have any suggestions or experiance with either? Or should I just forget it and have him just tie in the exhaust without either.
There are a few studies that show that an H pipe produces more torque in the lower RPM range while the X pipe helps with HP in the higher RPMS. They both have distinctive sounds, so I would go online and listen to a buch with your chosen mufflers to decide what you want. You may also want to consider installing a flanged H pipe to prevent you from having to drop the whole exhaust in case you want to move a pipe to work on one side of the car.

I just had new true duals installed with a H-pipe. I was told that an X-pipe is better, but only if it's close to the front. The C3's it's hard to get close to the front because of the tranny. He said it would be a waste to install an X-pipe that far back.

I have headers, 2.5" pipe, X-pipe, and Flowmaster 40's. I like it, and my mechanic said it was no problem to install. I actually wish it was a little louder, but I liked the performance benefit of the X pipe more
x is better but you can probably get the H-pipe installed and still get benefit from improved scavenging and better tuned, softened rumble. The same muffler shop that installed my 2.5" duals, performed a very clean, efficient, H-pipe installation and for $50. They even took the time to adjust my duals so the exhaust tips were lined up.
A good shop can fabricate an H pipe that runs under the tranny. Here's pics of what I had done on mine and a pic of the Dynomax Ultraflow polished stainless mufflers that I installed later. It works real nice.

It's probably more accurate to say that the closer the x pipe is to the front the better. In addition to balancing exhaust pressure side to side, it doubles the cross section of the exhaust system behind the X.
I had the work done at Kaspers Korner. in fact they took the pictures when they had it up on the rack. Here's their website.Look in the Galleries for examples of x pipes and custom systems. http://www.kasperskorner.com/kasperskorner.html
