Default Guages, mechanical or electric why?

Getting ready to buy the 2 1\8 guages. fuel, wtr temp, Oil, volt, oil temp or vac or fuel pres not sure which one of these 3.

What do you guys recommend for replacing the clock.?

Also what type guage mechanical or Electric?

Probably going with the Autometer pro Comp's because they are the only nice looking black face guages I see. Thought's on these?

No doubt... go electric.

Electric temp gauges are more accurate and electric pressure gauges don't have the hazard of pressurized lines running around. (and into the passanger compartment)

The only one that's mechanicl that you would replace would be the oil pressure gague. I never was thrilled with the dinky nylon tubing the factory used.

I'm not sure if the Autometer's water temp is calibrated to the factory sending unit. Do they provide a sending unit with the gague?

Thanks guys. Electric is what I figured I would go with but wanted to get some other opinions first. I had one of those nylon tubes brake on me before and it destroyed the carpet in an old NOVA I had. :mad

What guage would do me the most good for replacing the clock. I'm thinking oil temp.

Thanks
Wade

I went with an oil temp gauge to replace my clock, all mine are Autometers. Also the gauges are 2 1/16 not 2 1/8, that is if you want to use the same gauge panel.

Oil temp is good, will give you a better indication than water temp, though the two work hand in hand...think the optimal oil temp is 240 degrees. If oil temp starts to climb, you know right away something is not right. When the temp reaches the 280-290 degree mark, you be in a heap o trouble, boss.

I always thought mechanical water temp gauges were more acurate. Now all others I agree, go electric.

BlackRat, you might consider replacing the clock guage with a 270 sweep guage wired to a 3 or 4 position switch. You could easily switch between Oil Temp, Transmission Temp, Power Steering Fluid Temp, or Rear Diff Temp. Just takes a few more sensors wired back to the guage/switch. You will need some imagination to label it.
