77 Tack not working
I am new to the Corvettes, 9-13-03 & this forum.
I have been going to the http://www.zcar.com/ forum for 3 years.
Is there a search for answers to my questions, this forum, so anwers need not be posted over & over for newbes?
The tack is not working.
No air from the defroster.
The H/AC fan does not seem to be up to speed.
What manual/book is the best for trouble shooting?
What mufflers to get? I DO NOT want loud.
TIA Lee
Where is Duncombe from Des Moines? I am just south of Des Moines.
For the tach, Check the black power wire "BAT" from the distributor - it runs to a radio noise capacitor that is bolted to the manifold. From the other side of the capacitor there is a pink wire that runs to the 10 amp gauges fuse and the IGN 1 connector on the ignition switch. There is also a brown wire from the distributor that runs to the tach, if this wire gets shorted to ground it can damage the ignition module. The tach, gauges, and brake warning light are powered through the "gauges fuse".
Need more info on the defroster, is the fan running? does the heater work? Do you have all three speeds (actually four because with the switch all the way back it is on low, there is no off) on the blower switch? Just trying to determine if it is an electrical or vacuum problem.
H/AC fan - by this are you talking about the blower switch on the consol.
When I first got my car I only had low blower power, I cleaned the connectors on the blower motor (far right firewall) , blower resistors (a bayonet type assy mounted vertically into the top of the plenum just inboard of the blower motor - it should have four wires out of it, brown, lt green, lt blue, and dk blue. It is a pull off type connector). Above the resistors and slightly inboard on the firewall there is a metal box - this is the high speed blower relay, it has five or six wires out of it (red-this is the power wire for the high speed position of the fan) ( dk blue-this is the LO, MED LO, and MED HI wire from the blower resistors) (pink-this is the coil power wire that controls the position of the contacts for the high speed blower relay) (black-this is the ground for the coil and is also the ground for the blower motor, there may be two black wires-one for the relay and one for the blower)
Back to the blower resistors - the brown wire is a bypass circuit that provides constant power when the ignition switch is on to run the blower on low.
I would check and clean all connectors. If things don't work after you clean them up you can remove and carefully pry open the metal tabs on the bottom of the blower relay and lift the cover off to check the condition of the relay.
For manuals, I have the 1977 electrical troubleshooting manual and the assembly manual. I plan to get a shop manual. You can get these from Ecklers and other vette parts suppliers.
I don't know much about the available mufflers, but I am sure someone will answer.
Hope this helps, don't hesitate to jump in and ask, we don't mind repeat questions. There is a search function - you can select the topic, current or archive, and which forum you want to search. Its in the left menu column.

Yes there is a search feature, on the left the last item under "Forums". You may find some of your answers there. You will definately find a lot of discussion on muffelers, but most want more noise, not less. On my 77, after the Cat. Convert. "fell" off I went with a true dual setup and some inexpensive turbo mufflers. slightly louder then stock, good tone.
I haven't been to zcar.com in awhile. My 280XZ has been neglected snce I got the vette
