Default Ignition problem

I recently installed a new 454 in my 71. The car runs pretty good except when driving for about 30 min I start getting a hesitation. I also get a mild poping aout the exhaust. My guess is that my ignition is dieing. I have installed a new alt, coil, points and cond., cap, rotor, wires. Everything looks good. One question I have is with the resister wire to the coil. What happens if the wire is bad or over heats? Could this effect the ignition while running?

Could be, but BBs tend to develope a little stumble or hesitation after they get hot. This is usually carb related, and occurs on both Holley and Rochester equiped cars.

Ok that resistor wire is the positive lead to the coil (from the ignition switch). It prevents the coil from burning up under continuous use. But I think the HEI set-up did away with this for some good reason. I guess what I’m trying to say here is not every year shark used a resistor wire and I apologize but I’m too tired to research this tonight. BTW I don’t think Chevy used a ballast resistor on any shark (in case you wondered). Anyways the other wire to the positive side of coil is from the starter and is not a resistor wire. It provides a full 12VDC to coil only when starter is engaged - to help start things up.
That popping sounds like a vacuum advance problem out here in California. But then everything sounds alike an advance problem from this distance. :jester Just can’t explain why it wait’s 30 min. to begin unless the choke is in on this conspiracy. Using the stock EGR?
Ya know I had a 350 once that missed badly enough to take to Chevrolet. I had shorting/grounding plug wires due to a sharp-toothed tool I used to remove the wires for tune up. Didn’t expect this so close to spark plug connector. How are your plug wires? Could headers be burning them up?

Default Re: Ignition problem solved

Solve the ignition problem. Put in a MSD Corvette Tach Drive Dist, 6AL ignition and blaster 2 coil. Problems solved. The car runs awesome. Now if I can just get rid of the Edelbrock and replace it with a Demon, I will be all set.....
