I've got a friend with a 80 L82 vette. He wants to do upgrades on it. Is there anything special about these motors? I noticed that it has an aluminum intake, supposedly the cam has 222 dur @ .050" which I find rather large for a stock cam. What casting heads do they come with? 230hp for real? Car runs low 16's to high 15's?
From the factory : forged pistons, 2.02 heads, the cam is pretty decent for a factory grind.
These motors respond well to the usual upgrades, exhaust, carb tuning, dist curve adjustment. 14 sec should be easy to obtain with a minimal investment.
Over the base engine the L82 has the normal hot rod treatment, big valve heads, higher compression, and a wilder cam (same cam that was used on the 69 350ci/350hp engine). One major feature is that the L82 has a much stronger lower end: 4-bot mains, forged crank, and alum. impact extruded pistons.

Re: L82 questions? (Tom73)
Tom, Are you sure? I just went out to the shop and measured the valves in my heads and they were 194/150 valves with screw in studs and guide plates and are marked #402624 D/80
GM Parts Manual shows that the '70-'79 uses the #3849814 valve with 350 W/SP. H/PER and the '80 uses #3984180 W/SP. H/PER. I thought '80 was an odd year. Jim
I agree with d-man. The biggest restriction is the exhaust. The vettes from 75-82 had very restrictive catalytic converters. Also, having the distributor timing curve changed will increase performance too (biggest bang for buck).
The L46 Motor has higer static compression which gave a bit stronger lower end torque profile than the L-82.
With headers you get a pretty decent lope at idle.
