Default cable for autometer speedo revisited

Has anyone with a autometer guage found a cable that works? Please don't say the 68 cable I have one at the house and yes they fit the fittings on both ends but the cable doesn't engage the speedo. I'm getting quite frustrated with not having a working speedometer. Maybe I should call autometer and see what they suggest. Just wanted to hear from anyone who got this speedo guage to work.

Is there an adapter on the back of the autometer that is needed ?

I know some VDO gages needed an adapter to go from the threaded end on the gage to the push-on style clip that GM uses.

Like I said before, I had a custom speedo cable made for my 76 with the autometer phantom speedometer. But I have abandoned my complete custom interior in favor of restoration of the dash and center console. (yea, I know a lot of money for a 76, but at least it will make me happy) Anyway, I will soon decide if I am going to use factory spedo and tach (I still have them). If a 76 auto cable will fit your transmission, I will sell it to you cheap.

ps a search on alta vista for "custom speedometer cable" seemed to yield some possible vendors.

Thanks BigBadOrange I appreciate the offer but knowing my luck the auto one won't work. But I will have to do some internet surfing and see what I get. I'd do it know but they keep wanting me to do this work thing. How rude :D

Years ago when i did my conversion i got my cable from these guys - I would call them - as i did - explain the application - i.e. corvette - 4 speed - Autometer, and they should be able to fix you up.

Thanks fauxrs I'll give them a shot.

I've been meaning to ask you about your 5 speed tremec. My transmission has been having problems lately and unfortunatly I just switched to a 3.7 rear gear. How does that 3.27 first gear on your tremek feel with the 3.7 gear?

Its insane to use a word, I'm sure I could climb a phone pole in that gear  - at WOT I am only in it to maybe 35-40 mph so you can imagine im not there long. also - huge long strips of rubber are possible if I so desire it. but then again i usually run out of R's before too much is put on the road.

2nd and 3rd pull like gangbusters, they feel terrific - an absolute day and night compared to the close ratio 4 speed. Of course 4th gear is the same and 5th....sweet - cruising on the freeway at 2500 rpm going about 75 is just perfect - compared to the 3500 I would have done before the swap.

That doesn't sound too bad I thought first gear would be almost unusable with the 3.7's. How bad is the jump from first (3.27) to second(1.98). Does your engine bog any? Maybe I can swing a tremec after all. The richmond 6 speed was a bit pricey for my tastes. Thanks for replying.

Not unusable, but usable for only a short bit, the 1-2 shift is a big jump yes but it doenst lug the motor at all, as after the shift i am still in the power band.

To be perfectly honest the 1st gear (or rear gear) couldnt get any lower before it became useless.

I figured the shift would lug the motor but its good hearing from someone who has actually done it. I'll see if I can find someone to fix my super T10. If not at least I have an option. I also called speedometer plus hopefully I can get my new speedo working. Thanks.

I bought a speedometer cable from lokar from a street rod shop. You can also get it at summit for about 54.00. You cut it to length. I have not installed it yet so can't tell you how it worked out.

Your better auto parts stores have a cable catalog that you can see pictures and descriptions. If you know how long and what ends you want it's just a matter of browsing the back pages.
