i bought a custom autosound USA-2 stereo for vette and it didn't work properly right out of the box, custom autosound is going to replace it free of charge, however i think i am going to give up on it all together....
i visitited crutchfield.com and according their website, this stereo will work on the 74 without cutting the gague cluster...do you think it will work?
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Air980)
Is this the same thing?
This is from Ecklers. As you can see the dash cutout is a bit taller then the original radio so they added the "Corvette" at the top to fill up the space. Then the ***** are moved upward a bit to be centered.
The one you show should fit but would have extra space at the top and bottom of the center section. Can you live with that? It would save a hundred or more dollars :)
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Air980)
i have a modified Blaupunkt in my 74 that i installed many many years ago. All you have to do to fill in the space above and below the front display is foam rubber. you can get black close cell rubber weatherstrip from any home center or auto parts store for a few dollars. Cut a piece and stick it to the top and bottom of the display and when you put the radio in from the back of the gauge console it will fill in the area. Mine looks nice. Here's a link to my website that shows the install. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/vettfixr/page19.htm

Don't do it they are junk compared to what you can get when you buy aftermarket...Just get a used bezel and cut that one and keep your original and radion in tact
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Ken74Conv)
Ken,
I have the Kenwood in my '73. My opinion it is a very good unit. But I seldom turn it on. To me, the music that I want to hear in the Vette it that of the car itself. In reality I could probably get by with a mono AM radio :D
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Ken74Conv)
i LOVE music and it was after spending $1500 on a sound system that i realized that while in the vette i too prefer to listen to my engine when cruising...
BUT...when i DO turn it on, on that rare occation...WOW!
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Air980)
I have a kenwood that I took out of mine when i put in my sony. It is brand new, it just didn't have the power that i wanted, That would be loud.i could make ya deal if interested.
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Air980)
I took the kenwood by auto sound out.. It is an $89 dollar radio BTW. They charge big $ for the modded version. You can have mine and use the face plate and mod parts. (pay for postage) Unit does not work but all of the stuff you need to make the Kenwood a direct fit is there. I found the best prices on line to be $89. I put the original radio back in and it actualy sounds better, just not quite the volume.
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Air980)
The head unit itself is basically the same as the Custom Autosound one. The Custome Autosound is a direct replacement though. The Kenwood unit is not. Take my word for it. I used to have that exact same Kenwood unit in mine. The distance between the ***** is not corect.
I got bored with it and went with an in dash CD player with MP3 capabilities for the longer trips.

That looks like the same Alpine that I have in my truck - Very  - mine does the MP3 and WMA files so I always have plenty of tunes.
In the Vette I cut the console and put in a Blaupunkt CD player with a steering wheel mounted remote. If I had to do it all over again, I would!
I have never, ever heard any good comments about the sound and quality of the Custom Autosound systems. Nothing but complaints.
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (Air980)
I have one of those cutom audio sound ones, it came with the car, ill never buy from custom audiosound or kenwwod, thier parent company, again, not like i did in the first place. IUf i were you id look for one that has a cd player in it before making a decision, but i like it.
Re: thinking about purchasing this stereo for the 74 (pillowmeto)
I put the Kenwood version in my '74 with Alpine speakers & amp. There's junk somewhere in that system. Best bet it starts with a *K*. Not impressed at all.
