I am going to mount a surface mount sub on the very back wall between the rear speakers in the back of my '80. Does anybody know what the material is back there that is under the carpet? Also, how much room do I have between that wall and the gas tank behind it? I would really hate to ram a screw through the wall of the gas tank..I don't even like to think about it. Any info. you cats can share will be benificial and appreciated.
NO, it will tear out. You ahve to bolt using a backing washer or even better, drill holes for large nutplates. Rivet the nutplate to the underside of the car and bolt the sub to that.

Nutplate:
Cool! From NASA?? :skep:
Yup. That fiberglass back thereis quite thin and won't hold up to much by itself. Put a backing on it though and you can mount seatbelts to it!
If you crawl under your car from the back you can see how much room you have to work with. A couple inches I'd say from the rear of the tub to the fuel tank. If I'm recalling correctly.
The fuel tank is behind the rear bulkhead/fiberglass wall. There's a good bit of room there, it's about 2 to 4 inches there. Those nutplates, I just google searched for a pic, those nasa things must be super trick, i just use ordinary aviation grade ones, they're cheap.
