Default High performance with a muncie

Can our muncie M21 trannies be rebuilt or upgraded to handle some serious horsepower. Or is there a transmission of choice for some serious applications.

I have a couple of pip-dream eye in the sky projects in mind if I ever get a decent job.......

Muncies are pretty stout boxes to begin with...just what are your plans in the future? Richmond has 5 and 6 speed trannies, if you desire better gearing.

:iagree: Mine will be rebuilt when the time comes. Keep in mind that they were mated to some pretty potent engines. M22s were paired with L88s. I would think the would work quite well unless the extra gears are needed/desired.

a whipplecharged 383 -- figure I could get 700+ hp and trq out of it

But its a pipe dream anyway

Could I order a M22 gear set for my M21.... I guess the M22 was stronger than the M21

Yea, the M22 is stronger, for sure. I'm not sure the geat set will fit the M21 box, maybe it will. I've never driven an M22 car, but I understand the boxes are noisy, can hear the gears.

I would check ebay, and C3 parts for sale. The M22's pop up for sale, but expect to shell some serious change.

I believe the trannies are the same size, but an expert will have to chime in. The M21 gears were angle cut, as opposed to the stronger, straight cut of the M22 gears. "Rock Chrusher" came from the sounds made when shifting. Not nearly as smooth with straight cut teeth.

A company makes brand new M22's that are supposed to be stronger than the older ones as well. Just wondering if there was a rebuild kit or something I could do to my M21 so I didnt have to buy a new tranny.
http://www.5speeds.com/newm22.html

or this company is affliated with them too http://www.autogear.net/

Can't hurt to call and see if they sell the individual gears..only thing you save is the box, as you will be replacing all the internal gears, so, why not buy the box, and have your M21 intact...if you don't want the tranny anymore, sell it to offset the cost of the M22?

Would the M22 be able to handle 800 or so HP/TQ?

The M21 will be able to handle it as well. Where you break gears and run into problems is power slammiing...if you just shift fast and avoid the initial shock, the trannys will live. Acceleration won't destroy the trannys

I would really prefer to not break a tranny. Oh well I guess the 2K for the tranny is cheap insurance.

The rear end will still be the weakest link in the system. I personally would start there. A tranny that will support 800 hp with a rear end that supports 600 makes the additional handling capabilities of the tranny moot.

:iagree:

And by not slamming the gears, and avoiding the shock, the rear end will also live, but then....it's no fun just shifting, gotta slam the gears and see if the front end lifts...... :D

just get stronger yokes, get rid of the u bolts and get 427 end caps for the u joints. No need to replace, just go over the rear end and put new bearings and any other gears that show wear

m22 isn't straight cut, just cut at a lesser angle.

My only thought was that I have no idea what the best rear ends can handle. I tend to believe that unless you constantly slam the gears, the Muncie would outlive the rear end, even as a base M21. They are stout and you are more likely to spin the tires and bury the accelerator than slam the gears
