Default Engine build - follow up - w/ picts

Ok I got some more work done on the engine today. I had to go back and take the crank out after all of that work last week, I knew I still had to check the thrust of the crank when I finished up last week. We did that 1st thing and found it to be nearly zero.

So out came the crank to do some work on the thrust bearings, after that work, with the thrust set to .003 (which is on the tight side but within spec [.002-.006]) We proceeded to gap rings and install them on the pistons. This meant I had to go out and buy a ring gap filing wheel for my tool - which the local speed shop didnt have so....new gap filing tool - complete with abrasive wheel.

Rings gapped and installed to pistons I started at the front and worked my way to the back - the pictures below are the finished product.

The rods are fully balanced and equipped with ARP capscrews - tightened down with a box end wrench and a bolt stretch gauge. Next step is to reinstall the scraper - clearance it to the rods and install the oil pump, pickup and pan.

ODD BANK - the cylinders cleaned up great and the pistons went in with no problems.

EVEN BANK - the cylinder walls are like mirrors they reflect so well, in these picts you can barely see the crosshatch pattern.

the bits of red you can see is the redline synthetic assembly lube - the machine shop that did my block work turned me on to this stuff

Anyway, thats all for now - I'll be ordering the cam and timing chain shortly. Crower is a local mfr and will be where I get the cam from.

Good catch. That end-play is kind’a tough to measure as <.006” ain’t much room. I used a pry bar bout big enough to bend the crank so I never felt I had taken a reliable measurement (on my Pontiac). But I’ve always wondered what the mail order customers do when their crank is out’a spec.. Ship it back?

Lookin good, too purdy to put in a car.

Something caught my eye, I thought the idea was to have a good crosshatching to seat the rings ?

There is plenty good cross hatch, its just that the reflection makes it hard to see.

As it stands right now.

.040 over 350 block
>2 bolt main w/ arp studs
>scat 9000 cast steel crank
>scat forged rods w/ arp capscrews
>Speed pro liteweight hyperute pistons - flat top - about 9.8 cr w/ 63 cc head
>Speed pro plasma moly rings - file fit
>Misc. milodon oil control componants

future....
>Crower hydraulic roller cam - exact one not chosen yet (basicaly I am waffling between two right now)
>Aluminum heads - AFR 190 preferably and is what the design is based around
>Edelbrock performer intake
>new Qjet (when the time comes)

The motor should make about 350 hp...the cam spec should be a bit warmer than the zz4 cam.

I have to still do more research on the cam since I have to be smog legal...noone makes any roller cams worth talking about that are smog legal..and none legal in my application - but then they wont be tearing into the motor to see if I have an eo number on the cam.

Ill keep posting as things progress.
