ever since i bought my 77 i have had a slight clicking noise. lately the noise has gotten worse. the noise seems to be coming from the front of the engine and ticking rate goes up with the RPMs. i at first thought the fan was hitting the shroud but it spins freely when moved by hand. is it possible the fan cluth is causing this problem. also i have removed the A/C belt to see if that could be the problem, but the noise is still there.
It could be your water pump, signaling its about to fail, or it could be your rocker arms making the ticking noise if they're sticking/binding, etc... You can take off the valve covers and have a look for signs of binding or interference.
Possibly a exhause leak at the manifold and head, a loose rocker arm or a bad lifter. Check for the exhaust leak first by taking a 1 to 2' section of fuel line and use it like a stethescope to listen real close to the manifold/head area. I chased one for a while that sounded like a loose rocker arm and finally tried the hose trick, was able to clearly hear the ticking sound when the hose was near the burnt out gasket area.
