So I'm checking out gmpartsdirect.com website and seeing the "your cost" price thinking that's not too bad. I had heard that plan on 15-20% more but had not seen that yet. Well just for fun I did the add to my order on a centerline clutch that was "$321 your cost", when I got to the checkout screen there was a $65.00 S&H fee. Thats about a F*@K up way to sale your product. Does anyone know where to get GM parts at a fair price? My budget does not allow GM list price on every item I need.
The only time I have been able to beat GPD prices is from a local parts house that sells Delco parts. I shop both everytime I need something. You would gladly pay that $65.00 shipping fee versus the list price most dealers charge.
The first time I used GMPartsdirect I was also put off; You see these GREAT prices and then at final checkout you see these HUGE S&H charges and you feel like you are being scammed. But for whatever reason, that is their business model. I don't think they are even trying to sucker anyone. Once you get used to it you just compare their "all-in cost" to somebody else's. In many cases it is still a good deal, because the price they charge you is below "GM wholesale".
I like their website because you can enter the GM part # (if you can find the GM part #) and they give you the GM wholesale and GM list prices. Very useful information to have if you are buying parts from the dealer. MJ
Heh, don't feel bad. They are actually local to me, so I was thinking, hmmm, I'll just ride over, pick up the parts at a great price, and save myself the shipping. WRONG! If I go over there, they charge me LIST price - the web site prices are good on the internet only! So it's actually cheaper for me to order the part, then wait a couple of days for the UPS guy to work his way across town to their distribution facility, then find his way back to my house.
Sometimes you can find a local dealer who will give you decent prices if you're a regular, but as a rule the whole pricing structure in the parts business is wacko. :bs
Well, I guess everything said above is on target. I want to stick to GM parts so I guess I will use GM Parts Direct and checked the local Delco guys and compare prices. :chevy
I was looking at a fuel pump that my cost at GM partsdirect $35. Called local dealer they wanted $110 for the same part number. I think total from GM partsdirect was around $50.

Re: GM PARTS DIRECT Question (markdtn)
You gotta shop around. Try Sallee Chevy, Jim Pace parts and Scoggin's Dickey for GM parts. Depending on the part, they were sometimes a little more expensive for the part but shipping was less and were much quicker in delivery. GMParts direct took almost two weeks for a head gasket. Have your numbers ready and start calling. :chevy

Re: GM PARTS DIRECT Question (Mr D.)
:yesnod: Ya their shipping costs seem a bit out of line. They have a big initial shipping cost on the first item and continue to add more charges for additional items as if someone is weighting things as you order. And continue charging shipping even for tiny items like gaskets and fasteners with very little weight.
I have found parts (starter) listed at a lower price than others but found the shipping charges made it cheaper somewhere else.
But they are a great source for Chevy/AC Delco resto parts (and a supporting vendor). I just price shop the shipping charges included, as that’s the American way of business competition.
:D
I don't think they try and hide it. Its the first question/answer in their FAQs:

Below quoted from their site
======================================== ====== Why does shipping and handling fee seem so high?
Gmpartsdirect.com sells parts near published dealer cost plus a percentage for a shipping and handling fee. This fee is not UPS charges only. The shipping and handling pays for the shipping charges plus our other expenses like web programming, employees, etc. Another way to explain this is, we are selling you the part near published dealer cost, the shipping, and handling pays all of our expenses associated with running the web site. The amount left over after our expense is our profit. Keep in mind our overall price is a tremendous savings over retail price and in most cases is even cheaper than dealer wholesale shipped to your door step, and without leaving the convenience of the Mouse. Compare the overall price delivered to your door.

How do you search for parts for cars made before 1981? The parts search page asks you to first enter the year of your car and 1981 is the earliest year. Am I missing something?
I've used GM Direct in the past. Some prices are good (w/shipping not all). You have to e-mail them with your info, they will get back to you in about 2 days.

Bottom line: GM Parts Direct has SOME great deals on SOME items, not all. If you want to pay more else where, aint nobody stoppin you.

Actually I don't justify it or otherwise. I simply pasted in THEIR FAQ for reference. I am not the author, I don't sell parts, I am not related in any way to the company, and I couldn't care less who you get your parts from. So you and your friends can sleep better tonight knowing that my menacing figure won't be out selling parts to unsuspecting consumers. :D
