Specifically, 1980 and 1981 beige standard trans. were built? Can someone with a production list tell me? I think I've settled on that for my next vette some day if I can find one.
I know in 1980 there were about 3500 4 speeds made. Mine is one of them. And, by the way, mine is frost beige also. I'm not sure how many 4 speeds were beige, but I'll try to look it up.
Those kinda records were never kept by GM, but if you do some "theoretical" math, you'll find 14% of 1980 production were 4spds, SOOOOOOO if you take 14% of the number of Beige cars made in 1980, you'll come up with 429 Beige 1980 Corvettes were 4 speed cars. Do the same with 1981 and it comes up to 14.1%, take that percent multiplied again by the number of "Beige" '81s, and you come up with 541 Beige 1981 4spd cars. Remember, these numbers are just "theoretical", not to be used as "gospel" :lolg:
Hey Paul!? How many were available like that in '82? Could ya do some more o' that cipherin' and git back ta me on that? :jester :jester
......just kidding!
I always thought what would be neat if anyone could take an '82 Collector Edition and convert it to a four speed, say using an '81 donor car, but doing it neatly and "correct" as possible. It'd be cool to see at least ONE '82 Collector with a 4 spd out of that whole row of them at Carlisle, which all have automatics
But wanted to throw out a little experience to go with the numbers. Back when I was Vette shopping, I knew I wanted an '80 or '81, 4-speed. I had my black book, so I had the numbers you quoted. I was talking or corresponding with dozens of dealers and individuals across the country, and I began to notice a pattern.
I wish I had kept records of all the conversations, but basically it boils down to this: '80 & '81 Vettes in "traditional" colors (red, black, white) and other bright colors (yellow, mostly) tended to have 4-speed transmissions more often the the cars with... what's the right word here?... "less aggressive" colors??? Beige is probably a good example of that. I know there are beige '80-'81s out there with 4-speed trannies, and a lot of red ones with automatics. But the pattern I noticed was that the beige, blue, green, and brown cars seemed to have 4-speeds less often than the cars with more "racy" colors.
