Was washing off the car tonight and noticed a small spot just above the drivers side door handle that I must have burned through the clear when I was sanding and buffing. have any of you ever done this? If so what can be done to fix it other than repainting the entire door? The spot is small enough that knowone will notice but me. However you know how bad that can be :cry
Re: Burn through while buffing, any fixes? (BlackRat)
If it's just a small spot in the clearcoat you may be able to spot it with just clear. Depending on the type of paint you have you may be able to get some touch up spray like Duplicolor in clear. Spray the area lightly and then give it a few days to dry. Then color sand it lightly with 2000 grit paper and buff with 3M compound. The worst that will happen is that the repair will be noticeable and you'll have to paint the door anyway. The best is that you'll have a repair that isn't noticeable. Or you could just wait about 20 years and when your eyes get as bad as mine you won't be able to see it anymore.

Thanks vettfixr that was what I was planning on doing just didn't know if it was a good idea or not. I used PPG base clear and was planning on using a touch up gun on this spot. Thanks for the input.

To repair the burn through would sand the area around the burn through
with 2000 wet paper to roughen the surface. Then spray with clear.
The first several coats should be sprayed dry or the solvent will work
between the burn area and adjacent clear coat and lift the edges.
Then spray a wetter coat beyond the first dry coats to blend the area.
Complete the process by spraying a blending clear PPG DX 830 over
the new clear and slightly beyond the edges. This will help melt the
new clear into the old clear around the edges.

Good directions. Only thing I'd add is if you have access to a second gun, have it ready to go with the blending agent and mist it over the final shot of clear quickly. Make sure that any area to that'll be hit with more clear has been sanded with 2000 or even 1500.
