I bought my 72 Vette with carpeting that had been replaced and the underseat plastic covers that protect the seat belt retractors were gone.
I have since found a pair of those covers and would like to install them.
I've never actually seen them on an original car- my assembly manual has
diagrams that appear to show that area with a section of the carpet cut away.
Can anyone tell me what is the correct way to install the covers- cut out the carpet, or mount over the carpet?
Thanks, CDC cdcastle@aol.com
Several things, when I tore my car apart some years ago, I remember clearly the carpeting was cut in a square hole top of the belt retractors...they will tend to drag and jam up if not....I did not use my covers again as they trap moisture and for a daily driven car, that's a bad idea.....
Re: 72 Vette Interior installation question (mrvette)
Thanks for the responses. I'm thinking I will cut out the square hole and use the covers as a template. If moisture is a problem, I'm wondering if putting some small dessicant bags under the covers wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe even velcro them in place so thet don't interfere with the belts.?

Leave just enough carpet around the edges of the hole so that the belt cover holds it down. My carpet didn't interfere with the belt opperation, so I left some between the sill and the belt guide rod. Looks better that way too!

The carpet needs to have square holes cut in a such a way that the covers overlap the carpet about an inch on 3 sides. The side toward the door is normally cut out, but if you think it won't interfere leave it there. Make sure your drain holes at the base of the retractor well are clean for free drainage. I would not place anything inside, there is not enough room, and the dessicant packets will eventually become saturated and useless anyway.
