I am planning on towing my 1980 across the country and UHAUL is telling me that I need to remove my front spoiler to get it up on trailor. Is that true or can I just do something to minimize the ramp angle to get it up ? Anybody have any ideas or have done it already ??
Do you have a little ditch or slight inclined area in your yard? Back the trailer up to the side of the driveway or something, the set the ramps from the driveway to the trailer, and you have an almost flat place to load. Or use some long planks and blocking to get the car to approach at less of an angle.
I towed my 80 from Atlanta to Houston and it was a nightmare getting it on the dolly. I took off the front spoiler and didn't have enough clearance still. I fortunately had access to a hoist and was able to pick it up and set in on. On the flip side when you get to your destination you may not have the ability to pick it up again. Whatever you do be careful, but if I were to do it all over again I would pony up the extra hunsky bones and rent the tandem trailer!!
Good Luck
When I put my '80 on a U-Haul car hauler, I backed up the trailer to a driveway with an incline and didn't have any interference problems. Another thing you can do is to jack the front of the trailer up as high as you can, then have someone lower it after the car is up the ramps.
