Get a nice grind going into 4th unless I double clutch. I think that means a bad syncro gear. Fix it or put a 5spd in ? What am I looking costs'wise for either option ?
If it just a bad syncro and the rest of the trans is in good shape, new syncros are not that bad price wise. You must take the trans out and put them on but I have done it before. A new 5 speed is going to run about 1800 for just the trans. Total job about 2500 if you do it yourself. Give or take a couple hundred. If the Muncie needs a toatl rebuild about 500 to 600 if you R&R yourself. If you want the 5 speed now is the time before you start dumping money into the Muncie.
Those Tremic 5 speeds are nice, but at $2,800 a shot for the kit it's a bit steep. If you like the 4 speed then rebuild it. Go to 5speeds.com and get their Muncie kit. It will have everything that commonly wears, less the sliders, forks, and gears. They sell those too if you need them. Be sure your clutch is good too. They also have an excellant video on rebuilding, if you've never done this before I would buy it.
I rebuilt the Muncie out of my 69 for $300, that's with new forks and sliders, that leaves $2,500 for gas compared to the cost of the 5 speed kit.

If you're going to a 5 or 6 spd, I'm very much interested in buying your M21. I feel the need to shift my own gears in my TH350 equipped '69 (and my car was originally a M21 car.)
If you go the rebuild kit route.... pick up the special wrench for the front lock-nut. It's tough to do right without the special wrench. They sell it at the same place Gary mentioned.
As soon as my daughters (college) stop spending my money, I'm going the Tremec route.
It's too good to be true.
