painted, with chrome ribs. There seems to be some variation between the three years, but I believe just the horizontal ribs and the perimeter were chrome, with the rest painted.
Thanks, I guess that the ones that I have seen in photos that are completely chrome were customized. The ones on my 1970 are completely painted, but the car had been wrecked and repainted at least once before I got it.
Actually, the egg-crate grills were first chromed, then painted, with paint removed from the edges (or they were masked before painting). If you strip your grills, you'll find that they're chrome underneath the paint.

Check on the '70 registry site - but I believe that they are painted - except for
the edges of the horizontal lips.

The horizontal chrome was for 70 only. In 71 and 72 they were chrome on the horizontal and verticle (as well as the parimeter). Same grill, just different parts of it being masked.
Well not exactly the same grille. The 70s were heavy castings with slightly different configurations on the raised area, thus the different painting technique. The 71-72s were more refined and much lighter.
