A while ago I posted that to my surprise, there were no shims for any of the body mounts on my car. Last night, as I removed the rubber donuts from the frame at driver/passenger #1 and #4 body mounts, I noticed that they were different thicknesses!!! There seem to be numbers on the rubber cushion that correspond to different thicknesses. For example, one had a '39' on it, and was much bigger than another that just had a '09'. There was also a '20' that fell between the other two.
So my question is...when the body mounts were changed from the aluminum discs to the rubber cushions, did they make them in different thicknesses so that shims were no longer required??? Did shims disappear along with the solid body mounts???
Re: Body Mounts on my 75 - Different Thicknesses??? (75 BBC Stingray)
I think there were shims in my 75 mounts. I'll have to go back and review
my pictures to confirm. Stay tuned. We care. We're just a little slow. :jester
Re: Body Mounts on my 75 - Different Thicknesses??? (NHvette)
Trust me... I'm not complaining. The forum is free and the help is tremendous!
I would have never noticed the differences in cushion thickness if I had not been bored, and in an observant mood (trying to figure out where the new mouse family has taken up residence in my garage)
Re: Body Mounts on my 75 - Different Thicknesses??? (75 BBC Stingray)
I don't know why your 75 coupe has different body cushions. I also don't know if shims were not used with 73-82 Corvettes with the rubber cushions. I do know that the 73-75 convertibles used two of the the same body cushions as the coupes and there were two of the same type body cushions for the convertible. I converted my 70 coupe from the aluminum body spacers to the the 73-75 type body cushions and left the shims where they were. I also bought the 73-75 rubber body mounts for my 68 but have not changed them out yet. The two for the convertible, total of 4 used per car have white on the outside rubber to keep them from getting mixed up with the other 4 like what is used the coupe if you placed them all together out of the original boxes. You could just purchase 8 new ones and know they are the correct ones.
Re: Body Mounts on my 75 - Different Thicknesses??? (70ZZ3 96LT4)
It may be that they seem to be different thicknesses because they are old and crushed differently. Maybe they weren't all titened correctly. My 73 had 2 shims on one side and 3 on the other. The replacement rubber kit only came with enough shims for 1 each. That seemed to be ok so I didn't mess with it.
