I am beginning to feel like I should move over here, or at least sub-let, from the C4 area. Again my son is having problems and needs some advice.
He has replaced all 4 calipers and the master cylinder and he is still having problems. A couple of days ago he drove the car on approx. a 100 mile roundtrip and by the time he got home, the break light was on full time and he had no pedal. He says the fluid in the master was full.
I think he has air trapped somewhere in the system and have suggested he take it to someone and have it bleed again. I seem to remember from a long time ago that the calipers have a problem trapping air and when bleeding you need to tap them with a rubber hammer to get the air out.
Does this problem ring a bell with anyone. Again thanks in advance for any assistance.
There should be tons in the archives on this one. It is THE most common brake problem with these cars other than leaking. You have runnout on the rear rotors. They must be trued to .005 or less to assure that air is not pumped into the calipers.
:iagree: If he had a firm pedal and lost it over 100 miles, I'd say the problem is the rotors, not trapped air. (That's assuming there aren't any leaks).
If they look good then reinstall on car and check again for runout - side to side - movement. Once these are proven good to within spec by either luck or with shimming under the lugs.
Then take all 4 SS sleeved calipers apart and replace OEM seals with O-ring seals. These will dramatically reduce the effects of any future run-out and car will drive for years without problems with brakes due to sitting over the any period of time.
For even more solid brakes, replace rubber hoses with SS sleeved hoses.
