Just thought ide ask before I go searching myself. Does anyone know where the fuel pump relay is located on a 86 pont 6000 with 2.5L 4cyl? I need to replace the pump in tank and also want to slap a relay on there while im at it. Thanks
There is a bank of relays in the area of the left hood hinge. If I remember right it is the second relay in line. You should be able to hear it click when you turn the key on.
thanks pete, i found em i think. There are 3 in a row under the passenger side hood hinge. so you think its the one in the middle? I suppose the harnesses are different for each one so it shouldnt be too hard to figure out right?
The fuel pump relay will click as soon as the key is turned on. It will stay on for about 8 seconds if there is no oil pressure. If there is oil pressure then it will stay activated. You should be able to hold your hand on it while someone turns the key on to see which one it is. If I remember correctly two of the relays are the same and one is different. But it has been a long time since I had one so don't take that as gospel.
I got it all fixed. Heres the story on what the problem was. first the car cut out on me 4 times on the way home from work. By the way it was acting I believed it was starving for gas. The gas gauge was reading a steady 1/4 tank full. So I figured ide check the fuel filter since it had never been changed(150k mi). sure enough the filter was plugged and I could not even blow thru it. i thought cool, a $6 filter and done. Wrong!!! the car still wouldnt start. I could hear the elec pump running though. I took the filter off and turned the key on to watch for gas comming out but only got a trickle. So I figured since the car had 1/4 tank the pump had to be shot. So I picked up a pump and a relay just to be safe. when I went to drop the tank I noticed it was very light. Come to find out the tank was bone dry. The explaination for the gas gauge reading 1/4 tank was due the the internal tank baffle which is plastic. Part of it had cracked and come loose and lodged itself under the float. so the gauge reading was false. Since I had the tank out I went ahead and put the new pump on anyway. After all the old one did have 150k on it. anway...the POS is rollin again. Thanks again for the help.
