It is most noticable when I sit still and turn my steering wheel EITHER to left 10o'clock or right to 2o'clock: Get a clicking noise that feels like it is coming from under the car inside engine compartment near feet.
Is that my steering box gone bad or?? If so how hard are those to replace ?
And is it safe to buy a used one from salvage yard etc ??
no expert here, but if it was the steering box i think you would hear the clicking noise thru the full range of motion. check your rag joint between the steering box and firewall and it might possibly be a bushing inside the steering column. aren't there some collapsible nylon bushings or pieces inside the column that crush down in an accident??? maybe someone else will respond with more knowledge than myself.
When wheels are on the ground ONLY, I can tell/feel the "click" when turning the steering wheel.
Got under while I had a helper turn the wheel with a stethoscope and the click comes from either the PS control valve or the cylinder, they are so closely connected I cannot tell which one is producing it.
Any ideas where I should start, replace PS control valve ?
