Default question about Fire Extinguishers?

The last topic posted by Cali,77,L-82 of an Ebay vette that was cooked in a fire. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6168
Brought me to a sobering awakening.
I do need to get a Fire Extinguisher, but whats the difference between dry chemical or Halotron....besides the taste :jester

Pro and cons would be great

thanks in advance

dry chemical will "stick" to hot surfaces, and ruin them. Halon won't. depends how bad a fire you expect, I suppose. I just got a big extinguisher in my garage. I should put a smaller one in the vette.

Halotron is a clean agent where as the dry chem is not. Halotron is normally used by industries in computer rooms so that eq not on fire does not get messed up. It is more expensive for the Halotron, but I chose that since I do not want to clean up a mess. Vettedan on the forum sells the extingusihers with brackets to mount them in the vette.

Awhile back I acidentially left a rag under the hood. I then went on a little drive and the rag fell on something hot. It is a good thing I had this:

I spoke to the local expert on fire extinguishers.
He would gladly sell me either type.
He said the Halotron had less cleanup but was much more expensive and
was less effective.
My theory was if I had a fire in the Vette and was lucky enough to be able to
put it out with a fire extinguisher, cleanup would be the least of my
problems.

I keep mine behind the passenger seat so I can grab it while I'm still in the car. :chevy

During my engine swap I kept one at my right foot at all times... hehe, CONFIDENCE!

Just for sanity purposes only. I didnt want to be up fecal creek without a paddle if you know what I mean.

BTW: Right now I am using a home depot bought ABC FE it was like only 20$ and could probably put out almost anything I would have to deal with. Once I am ready, on the road, and moving I am going to get the Haltron. I wouldnt know the precise suppressent characteristics between the two but I would imagine both if used correctly would put out a car fire. Remember fire burns from the bottom up...

Is this mounting position in the way for passenger's legs? Right now I have the small ABC bottle that I just throw behind the seat.

I’m not familiar with “Halotron” extinguishers Strike but I know Halon agent extinguishers are still approved for general aviation use. Halon types were outlawed for normal domestic use because of the Ozone thing. But remain available since no acceptable substitutes are available for aircraft. But I think the major reason is halon is least likely to asphyxiate people inside aircraft while on fire – not good place to become unconscious. The halon agents do work really well on fossil fuel/fabric fires – much better than CO2 and even outperforms the dry chemical stuff. But more $$$.

It is 2.5 pounds and does not impact passengers in anyway. Sorta pricy, but nice in my opinion. Mark

Remember also. that depending which extinguisher you buy, it takes a different technique to use them effectively. With the dry chemical style you move the nozzle back and forth in a sweeping motion, to blanket the fire with the chemical, basically smothering it. With a halon or Co2 extinguisher, you hold the nozzle still, but pointing at the base of the flames. The idea here is since the gas is heavier than air, you eventually displace the air, and choke out the fire... simply waving the nozzle around will do exactly jack squat. Yes, they are a cleaner extinguisher than a dry chem type, but you need to know how to use them effectively... and it can take a few seconds for the process to happen, so even though it can be hard in "panic mode", you must be patient, keep a cool head and let it happen.
