See the egg crate behind the front tire on this car. Is it chrome or did he paint it? If painted, what color is it?
Now see the egg crate on my car. It is going to the paint shop about Nov. 15th. It will be painted GM Paint Code 41U - Black. My question is how can I highlight the egg crate like the red car above? Looking for any and all suggestions!

Re: Egg Crates (OHSIXX)
Mine is. The old paint on mine is peeling off and chrome is showing through in several places. Look at my sig pic real close and you can see some spots.
Should be chrome that is painted over in body color. On '70's the horizontal bars are unpainted (chrome shows) and the vertical bars are "swept" back and painted. In '71 and '72 both horizontal and vertical bars are left unpainted and the vertical bars have raised tips like the horizontals.

Mine looks like Barrys. I am just trying to figure out what to do with this area when my car is painted?
This is only a suggestion, but if you are going to paint the car black, (or any dark color) paint the egg crates the same color as the car, leaving only the tops of the horizontal and verticle bars chrome. If you leave the whole thing chrome I think it would look cheap. You want the egg crates to been noticed, but not to stand out.

I am glad you said that. I needed to hear it from someone else besides me. Thanks! :)

I think the all chrome looks good with that Maroon paint and the sidepipes. Thats that car on eBay.
Mine were black when I bought the car. I liked the way they looked with the War Bonnet Yellow so I kept it that way. I am thinking about blacking out my front grills and also the Astro Ventilation grills on the back deck also.
As for originality, they were all painted body color except for the edges. The edges were chrome. I guess 70, 71 and 72 had different variations of which edges were chromed but I never really noticed any difference between the years.
What do you guys think of my black/chrome edges in my sig?
One of the guys in our club has a yellow '72 and left them unpainted in chrome. I guess it's to go with all the other chroming he's had done, but I agree that left unpainted, the crates look cheesy.
IMO they should blend with the car not stand out, That being said I think the only way they look right is painted body color with the chrome edges unpainted.
Ohsixx,
I took the side grills and aluminum piece off the bottom of my 81 and painted them dark bronze. It looked so good I also took the rectangular piece off the front side marker lamps and painted them the same color. Looks great. The grills and aluminum piece were originally black and the side marker pieces were white.
