I have a question re: half shafts bolted to differential. Are the caps that go over the u-joints supposed to have washers on the bolts, or are the bolts made to not require washers? Also, do the bolts on the other end(at the trailing arm), do they require washers?
The Ujoints are held to the differential witheither straps or caps-both require lock washers. The caps use lock washers under the bolt heads,
the straps,(Ubolts), use lock washers and nuts.
The flange end to the spindle is held by 7/16-20 bolts with French locks. The bolts have a slight shouder on them that you probably won't find outside a vette supplier.

Thanks for the advice. By the way, can you tell me how the french locks are installed? I know what they look like, but do they bend over after tightening the bolts? It looks like they would rub aginst the inner brake housing when the wheels turn.
The French Locks can be a bear to get torqued to 75ft/lbs. I finally found the ones Bair's sells work better then the GM locks I used before. I use a little never seize on the bolts,The bolts should be the original type. I don't know who still sells them but I bought a couple of packs at Carlisle this Summer for about $7. It's worth it to get them if you don't have them or they're rusted. I also hammer the lock back so there is a flat under the bolt head and it doesn't catch the lock when you get up to 50-55 ft/lbs. That's where they start to twist. With a little slow tightening you should reach 75 ft/lbs and then bend over the tabs on the bolt heads. If you wreck a lock don't worry about it,we 've all been there.
