Questions about 200 4r
is it possible for me to rebuild it myself? i am very mechanically inclined, i think i could do it, but i dont really know where to start.
what stall converter comes with them from the factory? this is coming out of an 88 monte carlo.
any recommendations about parts? what about shift kits? which parts should i build it with and should or should i not install a shift kit.
im going to have about 420hp in front of this tranny, but i am planning on a little more later on.
also, any advice you can add would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS!! :yesnod:
You can do it.
I've always done my own work, but the TH400 in the vette was my first
tranny rebuild. I used a B+M Transkit. It comes with all the parts you need -
except for the bronze bushings. It also comes with optional parts for shift
improving. The directions with the Transkit were GREAT. I also bought the
Haynes tranny rebuilt manual, which covers TH400,700R4,200 4R, and TH350.
The manual has lots of pictures - which help a lot.
I can't help you with the converter choice.

home DIY old hot rodder. You need a large flat clean place, like a
sheet of plywood. When you take things apart, lay them out in sequence.
Helps going back in. What you really need is a good rebuild video - don't
bother with an ATSG manual - POC! Go to Jegs, Summit, or check these links
out. Oh, you need heavier duty parts - on one of these links there is something
like "extreme duty" or something - those are the heavy duty parts you need.
(I'm researching doing the very same thing for my 81 with a near-400hp 350
with a little over 400 torque). Depending on your rpm range and gears, and
what you'll be using it for, either the 2200 or 2500 rpm lockup. If you've got
a lumpy cam with soft low range throttle response, go the 2500. If you've got more of a mid-range motor with decent low end, a 2200 isn't bad for every day, esp if you've got 3:54 or deeper. By all means, read the info on these websites. Good luck! Oh, for sure use synthetic fluid and get a good cooler like a plate type (they're smaller & more efficient) B&M. Even a good trans temp gauge is a good thing - keep your tranny temp down and it'll live a heck of a lot longer.

what happened is that i started im march getting my car ready to paint, well you know how it goes from there...theoritically its my dads car, but i have taken care of it since i was 16, and i just want everything to be right...he says i spend too much money on it but i dont care...i dont do any of the things teenagers do today..so i figure this is my "high". ill look for a video, also, im going to take out the motor this winter and redo my engine bay. it will also help me exchange transmissions.
thanks for all the help guys!
thanks

IM me if you want to buy a 4 speed shifter, console plate, auto overhaul manual, and dip stick. All were only used a month. The shifter comes with a chrome ****.
