There are a couple of arguements, but matching numbers means the VIN on your car matches the number stamped on the front of the block. And the other arguement would be that the VIN matches the frame #. Most people go with the first arguement.
Means different things to different people. I'm in agreement with LAvetteman but some others take the definition way beyond that. While only the engine, body, trans, and frame were marked with the vin, there are markings on many other components that indicate if those components "match" the rest of the car. Those markings might indicate the date they were made or the options that they were combined with. If the car is being judged for originality, things such as the window glass, alternators, starters, carbs, distributors, etc., are looked at.
Does matching numbers mean the paint, engine size, and interior are original
In a sense Yes! The codes that define paint, engine and interior exist on the vehicle and define the vehicle trim...paint, interior and build date. But there is more.
What follows are three distinctively overlapping criteria to assess a Corvette’s authenticity all of which are interrelated and build the case for an original numbers matching car...and more so for those Corvettes that are more collectible. This is the classic definition of "numbers matching."
1. VIN: Engine pad VIN, transmission VIN and frame post VIN match
2. Date Codes: All date codes fall within six months of Trim Tag build date
3. Documentation: Original documents exist and confirm a particular Corvette with VIN was built with those RPOs equipped on the Corvette.
So in a sense you have a range from which sellers and buyers will select vehicle documentation to determine their definition of "numbers matching." Some select pad engine pad and frame post VIN...while others will use criteria in a combination from 1 through 3.
