Default Embarrasing noise....

When I get the RPM's up around 4500 or so There is a very loud embarassing squeel from a belt. I do not know wich belt , but I have replaced them all and put belt dressing on them. Does anyone have any ideas?

If your belts aren't aligned you need to shim them. The squeal may also be coming from worn out bearings in the alternator.

It could be that there is built up rubber on the pulleys. Take some coarse sand paper and clean all the pulley groves.

As I was typing this the wife called and said she scraped the C5 on the curb at the drive-in teller window and damaged the paint on the side of the car. :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad  :cry

Also try checking your power steering level. Mine did the same thing and the oil level was low. Filled it up and vawala.

A slightly bent or warped pully can also do this. Tough to find.

I have the same problem on my 1974 Coupe, 454/Auto/AC/PS/AIR.

When I purchased the car, the AC didn't work. I had occasional belt squeal. I replaced the PS belt, and tightened the others... no more noise.

This summer, I worked on the AC to get it working again. Part of the repair was a Delco rebuilt compressor. I also relaced all 4 (?) belts with repro belts from Quanta (?). AC works great... belt squeal (very loud) starts at about 3700 - 4000 RPM... only with AC on.

Replaced all belts again with Gates cog style belts... slight improvement. Now I started listening to all of the pulley driven mechanical stuff with a stethescope (sp ?). No noise from any bearings, pulleys, etc. Just belt squeal.

Again now, removed ALL belts one at a time and ran engine for a few minutes between each belt change. Also removed fan clutch. Noise is definitely from AC belt.

The bad news is I still have the noise, but now I have AC! I really don't know what to do next. All of the pulleys look good and appear to be properly aligned... at least to the naked eye.

If I have any further success, I'll let you know. Does your car have AC?

I know a guy who put double pulleys on his alternator. Maybe that would work for you.

I have a friend who does 63-67 restorations for a living (and is extremely well respected in this business). I noted this problem to him for my '64 alternator belt. I cleaned it, sanded the pullies, aligned it as best I could, and it still squeeks slightly He said that the trick is to actually put a little angle on the alt (i.e., misalign it slightly). Mine is not too bad and I haven't tried it yet.
