Just took delivery of a 74. Very pleased with car so far. Drove it home from transporter dropoff. It started up nicely. Ran smooth at idle. Warmed it up for a few minutes (75 degrees outside temp), and drove off.
Accelerated nicely at mild to moderate throttle. After a few miles, accelerated with about 3/4 throttle, and at about 3500 rpm, started cutting out. Seemed and felt like an ignition cutout, not fuel. Wife was following me from behind, she saw black smoke at those times when we discussed. So I'm thinking it's not a fuel thing, most likely some ignition thing.
Since it was smooth under mild to moderate acceleration, and cutting out at heavier acceleration, maybe something to do with ignition advance?
I'm fairly knowledgble about these things, but new to C-3's, so any "C-3 experience" guidance steering me in the right direction would be much appreciated. :flag
Re: Engine miss help needed on a 74 350 J (Bill Oxley)
You might want to check the points as well. My '74 seemed to idle well, but above 3500 or so it woudl cut out and backfire a little. A new set of points and a condenser made it run like new again.
