Default What motor should i make

First let me say i have a 454 block (soon to be a 4bolt), i am ready to take to the machinest and start ordering parts.......i am torn between making these three motors out of this block, which one would you choose???? ,,,,,

What would be the cid on a 454 block/ bore to a 4.331/stroked to 4.375 with 6.385 rods,,,,is this combo even possible????

I want a tire shredding monster that can wrap up quick!!!!!!!!! :steering:

What do you really want??? A high reving motor or a torque monster??? I vote for the 30 over 427 cause I would want to turn the hell out of it. The 427 will give you nice torque and a shorter stroke so it revs quicker. Now if you just want to putt around all day and have killer torque for with the 454 or bigger.

You've got two issues to figure out with a 4.375" stroke:

1. Will it fit in your block? This all depends on the exact rod that you choose, but no matter what it will be real tight in there, and require custom work to make everything fit.

2. Who makes an affordable 4.375" crank that will fit your block and 6.385" rods? Most stroker big blocks are built around a 4.25" stroke and 6.385" rods because it fits, it's readily available, and most importantly you won't need a mortgage to pay for the parts.

My vote would be for either a .030 over 489 or a .060 over 496, but they're not in your poll. Build it as big as you can, then put the parts into it that deliver the power you want. Sure, a 427 can run over 7000 rpms, but there are also 540ish engines here on the forum putting out over 700hp and running over 7000 rpms on pump gas without any extravagant parts. That's a tall order for a short stroke mill like a 396 or 427. If you're in the drivers seat, I don't think you'll be missing any rpms...

:iagree: 4.250 is the longest stroke a BBC can take 496 - 510 ci are wonderful motors.

Why do people  confuse short stroke with faster revving motor????

build these motors up equally with a high performance rebuild.

Take a 69 Z-28 302 ci with a 4.11 rearend and put it in 4th gear at 40 mph
Take a 69 Z-28 427 ci with a 4.11 rearend and put it in 4th gear at 40 mph
Take a 69 Z-28 496 ci with a 4.11 rearend and put it in 4th gear at 40 mph

All cars stomp on the gas at the same time.

Which car gets to 120 mph first?

The one with the most TQ!!!!!!!!!! The 496 could have probably got up to 120 and be stomping on the brakes to a near dead stop by the time the wimpy 302 even gets to 120 mph.

Yup make it a 496, put some money into the heads (AFR 305 -315 would be a good start) big cam (255+ at .050 or more) solid roller if you want to spend the money, or at least a hydraulic roller or solid flat tappet, certainly not a flat hydraulic. Victor Jr. or bigger intake and at least a Holley HP 950. 10.5 or more to 1. The above build would close in on 700 hp.

Give us some more ideas on the money you want to spend, HP goals and hood clearance issues and you will get more specific advise.

Thanks  Hey guys keep the opinions and suggestions coming,,,,,this is my first bigblock so i have know idea what combos work and which dont. Many of you do :yesnod: So all advice is appreciated!
-----------------------------------------
69ratt, ive done a lot of thinking today
i guess im looking to stay into the 550-650 HP range without the NOS,,,, the sky is the limit with the money on this motor(but im not going to go all out because its not really needed///its a weekend car not a dragster)

for example----i will probably go with some good bowties and have some headwork done,, or get AFR's with some minor headwork........but i wont get a 2500-3000 dollar set of heads then have 5000 in machinework done to them if you get my point,,, dont need to, i only want 600 maybe 650 HP i can get that easy strait out of the box.

The parts i will buy will be the best i can find,,,,,which is where advice from you fellows will come in and advice from the machinest.

I will be using my current NOS system on this motor its a 150shot. I have a 454 block that a 2 bolt and i am ordering the Mildon 4 bolt maincaps and will have those machined in.

I am leaning towards an eagle 4340 4.25 crank
with eagle 4340 Hbeam 6.135 780gram rods
it will be bored 60 over!!!!!!!!!
a hyd roller cam.

and yes the 10.5:1 sounds somewhere in my lines,,,,,,,,,,what pistons would be the best?????

My biggest question,,,,,,,,WHAT CAM?  i want something that rumbles a crazy rumble but still lets me use my vacume stuff,,,,,,,,no more than 6500 rpms i dont need anymore than that

I want to keep the motor stock looking (you know!!! use stock valve covers, paint the nicely ported aluminum intake, paint the New high HP heads orange on the outside), so i was going to go with a duelplane, and i want to keep the stock hood. :blueangel:

Ok, the stock hood is the biggest problem. On a 69 with a RPM Air Gap you can not run an air cleaner that will flow enough to not choke a 450rwhp motor (lots of dyno testing proved this on my car with a drop base, etc) I think the best intake that will fit under the stock hood is the Holley strip dominator, there are some older ones 427 Hotrod will probably know about better than I C-454 ?. Hopefully he will chime in. You may need to put some money into the intake to make it work properly.

If it were my motor I would get the AFR 315 CNC heads set up for a roller cam. No more work needed to them. They are kick a** out of the box.

If you choose a hyd. roller I would look at something in the 252 + at .050 (hyd. cams act approx 8 * bigger than a solid) You need to post your tranny / stall, gears, combo to get a better idea. Comp has a couple of good ones. A radicle idle will not be a problem, neither will making your power brakes work.

Get the L-19 rod bolt upgrade for your rods.

A Dominator would make the most power, but you may find the Holley HP series easier to tune, more steetable, easier to find air cleaners for etc. If you go the HP route get the 1000. I run one on my 454 and love it. Ask Holley if you should go with the annular or down leg boosters, your motor is probably a toss up.

Although you do not "need" them I really like JE pistons, SRP's would be fine for a 150 shot. Tell JE you are going to run nitrous and they may move the rings down, maybe not for such a small shot.
