before the C5 came out? C4 used to mean a Ford transmission or explosives. Now it means '84-96 'Vette!!!!!!! What a mixed up world! Are the '63-'67's still called mid-years or are they C2's? Arghhhh!!!
Re: how come there wasn't a C-3............ (PRESSURERAT)
this topic has come up before. Now if I remember right from the magazine I read . This was coined when the c 5's came out. Then the #'s just fell into place. c4 c3 c2 c1 as in generations of body syles
Re: how come there wasn't a C-3............ (PRESSURERAT)
A chevy marketing guy came up with the C5 bit. But check the Chevy/Corvette web page, they do not use the C5 name (other then the C5R for the race car). They refer to it as the 5th generation. I have a feeling that you will not see any offical Chevy reference to a C6 when it does come out, just "6th generation".
Re: how come there wasn't a C-3............ (PRESSURERAT)
interestingly enough, i was perusing my copy of "how to restore and modify your corvette" by richard newton the other day, and he refers to the "c-3" as the fourth generation of corvette. apparently, chevrolet didn't consult with him prior to their labeling the fifth gen the c-5. too bad. i think that is much more accurate anyway.
c1: 53-55
c2: 56-62
c3: 63-67
c4: 68-82
c5: 84-96
c6: 97-current
i think that is a much more accurate representation of the true evolution of the corvette. but, hey, nobody ever asks me.
Re: how come there wasn't a C-3............ (Pedro'74)
pedro, LAvetteman, i agree with you both. sort of. since we have been introduced to this convoluted system, i thought that made the most sense. if your differentiating on the basis of styling, it makes the most sense. if your differentiating on the basis of technology (i.e. chassis, suspension, etc.) i would think it should go more like this:
c1: '53-'62
c2: '63-'82
c3: '84-96
c4: '97-current
the way i see it, it doesn't matter which way you break it down, the current designation doesn't fit correctly.
damn, if only they would just ask me! ;)
