Default Backfires through Carb when cold.

I am running a small block with a 274 XE cam, DART cool can intake, demon carb (no choke), 10.5 to 1 compression (factory rating in 69) ported factory "camel hump heads with 2.02/1.60 valves. When the car is cold its pretty "stubborn" coughs and splutters until it gets warm, then goes liek stink!!!. I noticed today that it actually backfired through the carb when cold, so maybe the timing is a little out, in which direction should I adjust, advance it or retard it?

Nick

If the timing is retarded it can cause a backfire. I woulf guess you are having trouble with a lean backfire. Keep your foot out of the kitchen until the car warms up, or put a choke on it to help richen the mixture.

:iagree: I have no choke as well. I keep light pumping to keep raw fuel pouring into the mix until she warms up a bit.

In NY you need a choke unless this only a summer car. Put a timing light on it before you adjust the dist.
