I made the mistake of getting pre approved at the credit union and now eveything I look at reminds me of a vette and the fact that my garage is still missing one....anyway....
I like the look of side pipes but not the flesh burning or noise level right by my ear and since I drive 60 miles to work it would get anoying. I was planning on getting side pipes for the look and figuring some way to hang em but not hook them up and have an under car exhaust. My uncle suggested that there might be a kit for "fake" side pipes like you used to be able to get back in the 50's and 60's.- basicly they look just like a side pipe only they are not built to be used and there is no way to actualy connect them once they go under the car...any ideas?
I think I have seen these on those big marshmellow hot rods but why? It is a little bit ricer for my taste. Sort of like those big wings which do not do anything.

Mine are made by Hooker Header and are not hooked up. Shhhhh! don't tell anyone.
They have Hooker Header stamped right on the fake collector, these actually
could be hooked up but there is no real header. I am glad that I have these
instead of the ones that are hooked up because my legs hit them everytime
I get out of the car. I bought these off of ebay for around $300. You could
try contacting Hooker Header. Click pic to enlarge it and go to my webpage
for more pics. HTH
 :seeya
I had the same side pipes as in the JC Whitney links 30 years ago on my 73 AMX. They were functional, but only one tube. The sound was great. Of course back then, I think I only payed $40 for the pair. Put them on and hook them up..........
If they're fake, the car will tell on you everytime you crank it up. I just could'nt live with that. If the looks like it will roar -- make it roar!
I appreciate all the coments...even the evil ones :D Problem is that I drive 60 miles to work, so that noise at my ear would be too much. I also leave for work just before 5:00am, so again the noise level would be too much and Washington State has some funky laws for just about everything and If I recall its illegal to modify an exhaust system on a catalytic converter vehicle unless its modified as stock..or something like that. So bad enough its a vette but advertising functional sidepipes might be a ticket waiting to happen. BUT! if I can get the look and build my own under car system with the chambered mufflers Ive a better chance getting away with it....not to mention lack of flesh wounds and deafness in one ear. If I want to raise hell with a fully functional hot rod I'll just fire up the 57 chevy and make some real noise.
Why don't you make the system switchable between undercar and sidepipes? You could retain the look and still get the sound on the occassions you want it. Or are you afraid you'll never be able to turn them off :D
I know it would be more complicated, and a little more expensive, but if you're going to have both on the car anyway....
To me, the difference between just sticking them on, or doing a setup like I suggested, is the difference between major-Bubba and very trick.

Could use the cut outs with either a manual pull switch or elec switch.
