Name the Part: Round 2
Welcome back to round two of (say it with me) NAME THAT PART!
1
This is located on the panel under the steering colum. This is a view with the panel removed. What is it and what does it do?
2
What is this wiring harness to? The first pic is in my car. The second pic is in a friends '79. What is the black box the orange and green wires are connected to and what does it do?
(pic 1)
(pic 2)
3
What is the black plate bolted to the intake manifold? Should there be a vacuum line attached to that? And once again, what is it and what does it do?
I believe item #1 is the VACUUM CONTROL SWITH. The switch will allow the headlights to raise without turning them on. I believe this was done to prevent the headlight doors to "freeze" up in cold weather. To get the lamps back down, just push the switch back up.
pic 1 = vacuum override for the headlights, so you can put the headlights up without turning them on
Pic 2 = Have no earthly idea :jester I'll have to look under my dash tonight to see what it's hooked to.
Pic 3 = Heat Riser block off plate, It dosen't look like you need it because you've got electric choke.
Whoops, I took a closer look at the picture, thats not a block off. Anyway it's for the chock and those are not vacuum lines.

Question 2 the first pic is my car. The wiring harness is just dangling there. The second pic in q2 is of a friends car. The wire harness in question is connected to the black box at the bottom center of the second pic. What is the black box?
This reminds of a line from Kindergarden Cop
"Who is your daddy and what does he do?"
:)
#2 might be the safety switch plug for the clutch, I have mine jumped so I can start it without getting in the car. Would have to look at my car to be sure.
1. Headlamp Override switch was needed to replace or align sealed lamps without having to apply power to them.
3. Quadrajets in that era had hard lines running from that plate to the choke spring. Heating the air in the crossover passage makes the choke spring resistance reduce, thus removing the extra throttle in step-down increments. There are several companies that sell the block-off plate for this since you now have electronic choke.

Re: Name the Part: Round 2 (Fevre)
Nope on the clutch start switch. That is wired with a purple and a yellow wire. Mine are connected together also. I however, don't want it that way and will return it to it's original configuration.
I think by the time I'm done here I'll have mastered the underdash wiring. Talk about an unintentional side effect of a problematic new toy.

My first vette was a 68 that should have been stamped "SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED" But I learned alot from it :seeya
I think that pic #2 (and #3) are for a warning buzzer (key in, headlights on, door ajar, something like that)
You should be able to take the one off your buddy's car, check the part number stamped on it, and ask your local dealer to cross check it for you.
